FAQ: Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) at Embodied Counseling

Mission reminder: At Embodied Counseling, we aim to provide the highest quality outpatient care for eating disorders—helping more people recover and find joy. KAP is one of the tools we offer, grounded in our values of Holistic Care, Innovation, and Compassionate Expertise.

Who might be a good candidate for KAP?
You might benefit from KAP if you:
  • Have tried therapy or meds before and still feel stuck
  • Are experiencing depression, anxiety, or other mood symptoms alongside an eating disorder
  • Want deeper insight or relief from patterns that feel repetitive or overwhelming
  • Are medically stable enough for the evaluation process (Journey Clinical will assess this carefully)
What happens during KAP at Embodied Counseling?
  1. Medical Intake & Screening — Journey Clinical evaluates your physical and mental health to ensure safety.
  2. Preparation Session — We’ll meet to set intentions, clarify what to expect, and ensure you feel grounded going in.
  3. Dosing Session — You self-administer ketamine under medical supervision in a safe setting (eye mask, headphones, etc.), with psychotherapy support.
  4. Integration Session — Within 24-72 hours, we process your experience, exploring insights and ways to integrate them.
  5. Follow-Up Sessions — Usually a series (often 6-8), combining dosing, integration, and ongoing therapy to support lasting change.
Is KAP safe? What are side effects?
Safety is a priority. Important points:
  • Ketamine is legal and well-studied, though using it in eating disorder populations requires extra care due to medical and nutritional fragility.
  • Common short-term side effects: mild nausea, dizziness, dissociation, altered perception. These are generally temporary.
  • Medical monitoring (via Journey Clinical) includes screening medical history, vital signs, and excluding conditions where ketamine would be unsafe.
  • If you’re not medically eligible, we will not move forward, and you will be notified early in the process.
How much does it cost? Is insurance involved?
  • There are two parts: the medical component (via Journey Clinical) and the therapy/integration component (via Embodied Counseling).
  • Preparation & integration sessions are billed similarly to regular therapy sessions and may be covered by insurance if your provider accepts them.
  • Dosing sessions are extended and typically cost more (please contact us for current rates).
  • For out-of-network clients, Journey Clinical can provide superbills so you can submit for reimbursement (often 70–80%, depending on plan).
What if KAP isn’t a fit for me?
That’s totally okay.
  • Not everyone will be medically or emotionally ready for this kind of work.
  • If KAP doesn’t feel right, we can explore other evidence-based therapies, adjust treatment plans, or offer alternatives.
  • Your therapist will work with you to weigh the pros and cons; the goal is always safety + what supports your recovery.
Why Embodied Counseling?
We offer KAP because it aligns with what we believe:
  • Healing is more than just symptom-management—it’s about transformation and deeply rooted change (Holistic Care).
  • We want to bring into outpatient care those cutting-edge, researched-based options that often feel out of reach (Innovation).
  • We deeply respect the courage it takes to try something new, especially when recovery has been hard. We partner with experts, listen, and support you every step of the way (Compassionate Expertise + Community Support).
